The South African CSA snowball is rolling on…

I’ve written quite a bit about South Africa’s growing acceptance of CSA (corporate social activity) initiatives, which usually target children’s homes; charities; the elderly; the disadvantaged – there are a myriad pleasing examples out there, such as the Smile Foundation’s annual Smile Week, which improves the lives of children with ‘the gift of a smile’, and M-Net Cares’ recent collaboration with the Gogo Trust to create Gogo Magic - a knitting initiative that creates employment and skills transfer, helping children in need and the unemployed.

CSA seems to have shifted focus from merely ‘planting trees to offset carbon footprint’, to a stronger emphasis on improving quality of life by donating our time; knowledge; and care instead of just money.

For example, CHOC, in partnership with ComutaNet, observed International Childhood Cancer Day last year after a successful broadcast campaign aimed at reaching South Africa’s mass market with the life-changing knowledge needed to help fight childhood cancer. The campaign emphasised the importance for parents to be informed of the ‘Saint Siluan’ early warning signs of childhood cancer.

As you can see, there is lots of evidence that the spirit of CSA is growing, and it is especially strong as South Africa takes the spotlight with the 2010 FIFA World Cup – I hope we will feel the benefit of positive publicity of the country post-event, with the rise of more CSA initiatives aimed at improving the lives of South Africans from both within and outside our shores.
