Will you fly that flag beyond the soccer event?

by Leigh Andrews on 10 June 2010

If 'the boys' don’t pull something drastic out of the bag tomorrow… like performing the Diski Dance on the field in New Zealand ‘Haka’ style… we might be in trouble.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for shows of national pride, and seeing huge gatherings of people all united for a common cause, such as the mass Bafana Bafana supporters gatherings yesterday, does on occasion bring a tear of pride to my eye. I’m just a little worried that at the end of all the celebrations, on 11 July – with Jeremy Mansfield leaving Highveld 94.7’s Rude Awakening morning show the following morning – we’re heading for a major slump in national motivation levels… the World Cup hangover, if you will.

Come 12 July, post event, or even the day after South Africa is out of the running (I’m not being a pessimist, just a realist – we are ranked by FIFA as 83, compared to Brazil at number one… so, just saying it would take a bit of a miracle for us to be standing on the winning podium in a month’s time) – will South Africans keep the flag flying? Or will you crumple your car’s mirror socks (fantastic initiative by Mini SA, by the way) up in a ball and toss them in a cupboard, never to be seen again? Many cars are going to look naked without their supporter’s memorabilia… and while I’m sure the vuvuzela blasts will eventually fade away, I have a feeling that South Africans are going to replace the Bafana Bafana accessories with others in the colours of our favourite rugby and cricket teams.

I've got a feeling that national pride will extend beyond the big event.

this id directed at the compilers of "Play the game" sunday times of 13.06 2010. could you please ensure that your onformation is accurate. the page in which you give the demographies of the world cup participating countries, the location of Nigeria and Cameroon is in accurate. Their locations have been swapped. This is accepatable. You are misinforming the visitors to the 'world cup'. secondly I am not convinced that the the English population is 51m. there is a difference between England anf UK, please make the distinction clear. Thanks
