New ways to watch your favourite content

by Leigh Andrews on 2 June 2010

ImageTechnological developments can be cool or scary, depending on your outlook. I’m a hesitant optimist in this regard, in that while I love the thought of progress and innovation, I do feel we’re hurtling inevitably towards a Minority Report-type society, where criminals are caught before they even commit a crime, and we can communicate with others through our thoughts…

This brings to mind all sorts of privacy/ intellectual property issues, but I digress. I wanted to point out a number of exciting new trends that bring together the previously disconnected worlds of online and broadcasting.

Cape Town’s Good Hope FM radio station has done this to good effect recently by launching an online and mobile television platform in partnership with Zoopy. This includes a cooking segment and the broadcast of interviews held in the Good Hope FM studio, so that viewers can see what goes on behind the scenes.

If TV and online integration excites you, there’s lots more in store, what with Google TV and Bee.tv already letting us personalise our TV- and video-viewing, through cross-platform offerings.

One has to wonder, “What next?” It might not be that long before we have microchips inserted in our arms, to provide a stream of our favourite programming directly to our brains, removing the thereby eliminating the need for TVs entirely. (Maybe I should patent that!)
