Online PR calls for short, snappy, ‘in your face’ communications

Lately, I’ve written quite a bit about how the PR industry should take advantage of the latest communications platform – the statusphere. This has brought about a revolution in thinking when putting press releases together, as people simply do not have the time to wade through reams of information, searching for something that might be relevant to them – especially where online and social networking communications are concerned, as the ‘distraction value’ is especially high there.

Added to this, we’re bombarded by advertising – as Kerryn Le Cordeur states: “all you have to do is turn on the TV; listen to the radio; flip through a newspaper or magazine; browse online; walk or drive down the street or through a shopping centre… and there it is, right in your face, whether you like it or not.” So to make sure your communication message is noticed, its value for the audience needs to be evident, in an ‘in your face’ way.

Desi Tzoneva adds that Twitter has been so successful because of the instant gratification it offers in 140 characters or less. She states that beyond Twitter, the internet mixes information delivery with entertainment on a large scale, while also offering a myriad of routes to procrastination - and this is the essence of online communications, providing us with a multitude of options and information sources, and new ways to interact with brands and corporations that were previously unreachable.

So to make your online campaign successful, keep it short and sweet, make sure the value for your audience is obvious, and offer lots of ways for them to interact with you and provide feedback.

What have your ‘online PR’ experiences been like? Do you have tips for making digital campaigns a success? Please share your thoughts below.
