‘Click’! Hey, I didn’t flick that switch…

As a web editor, I have a keen interest in anything media-related. So when I came across a blog post by AdLab, stating that all (American-owned, at this stage) TVs belong to Hollywood, my interest was piqued. It seems the big guys at the American Federal Communications Commission are permitting the companies that sell movies through video-on-demand online services to activate signals which will “block the copying or other re-use in home entertainment systems of recent releases."

Wait a minute. That means companies will be able to access the devices in my personal home/ office through satellite and set-top boxes, and remotely play with certain switches? No wonder there has been such an uproar in the US of A about this. It isn’t just about upgrading your software for you – no, this is about physically tampering with your hardware ('selectable output control’ is the official term).

And just how will they do this? According to the New York Times, the technology is in all likeliness already there, lying dormant in your seemingly innocuous home theatre system.

Public Knowledge adds that this means companies can take control of consumers’ TV sets or set-top boxes and block the viewing of TV programmes or motion pictures.

I understand copyright issues, and I can see how the companies would get annoyed by subscribers who download a movie and make a copy for their friends… but surely this is an invasion of privacy? What are your thoughts?
