Social buying – working together for that discount

by Leigh Andrews on 6 May 2010

The
Joburg.co.za newsletter is one of my favourite online reads, mainly because Managing Director, Shelli Nurcombe-Thorne was my high school English and Drama teacher… but also because she often mentions interesting new trends and happenings in Joburg that I would not have heard about elsewhere.

The latest newsletter had a number of interesting topics (such as Eye Majic Instant Eye Shadow), but the one that really caught my eye is from Wicount.co.za, which is focused on 'Social Buying'. Intrigued? Me too! Mrs N-T explains that the site offers: “huge discounts on things to do in and around Joburg,” such as special prices for meals at restaurants; entry to sporting events; spa treatments; and theatre shows… but you only get the deal if enough people opt-in to the offer before it ends (usually only valid for a day). So, if the minimum amount of interested parties isn't reached, you're not charged for the deal and it falls away. But if enough people sign up (yay), you receive the voucher/ gift certificate in your email inbox the following day, which you can use yourself or give away as a gift. My mom signed up instantly when I told her about this, as it is such a lovely idea. Beyond the obvious likeability of getting a good deal, I love how the Wicount (We count) idea links to the current ‘Generation G’ mindset of sharing, working together, and crowdsourcing.

According to the Wicount site, it was developed for people who have 'lived in Joburg for years, but don't take advantage of many of the great things this city has to offer'. They define social buying as “promising businesses a minimum number of customers, we get discounts you won't find anywhere else.”

Social buying’s not a new concept, with many online group buying sites in out there across the ether… but Wicount definitely seems to be leading the local market, offering discounts tailored to your area. For more information, visit the site: www.wicount.co.za.

What are your thoughts on ‘group buying’? I can’t seem to think of any negatives – unless of course the required number of purchasers isn’t met, and the deal just falls away. Please leave your thoughts on the concept below.

I just wanted to let you know that at Wicount, we're mad about customer service. We don't want to hide our identities or our contact details. So if you have any question about how Wicount works, about the deal on offer, of if you're a business owner that wants to get featured, feel free to email me personally, aaron@wicount.co.za. Kind Regards, Aaron Toys - Co-founder.
