The communication style-change challenge…

You’d have to have been living under a rock – and a very big one, at that – to not have noticed that the array of communication mediums has increased drastically in the past decade. But have you stopped to think how this will affect the actual communication message you are putting across? Something lengthy simply won’t gel in the social media space (hello, social media press release!) Kate Haupt of SimonSays Communications agrees that with new technology came numerous opportunities for public relations within the communication sphere. She feels that MXit; SMS campaigns; blogs; Facebook; and Twitter are creating a new communication reality, and as ever, one needs to take account of the audience’s generation; education level; and of course, the medium itself. MXit communication, for instance, is very to-the-point and structured in a distinctive style – deviating from this is not recommended. It takes practice to fully understand an audience such as the MXit audience, and PR executives must be open to learning about those who use these mediums and how to talk their language.

Lots to think of, especially as PR executives now have to be able to multi-speak in numerous styles, from traditional press releases to quirkily tweeting about medical study results, such as the @CEPHEUS_Study on Twitter.

Have you embraced the communication style-change challenge? Do you tailor each press release to meet the needs of the audience you are targeting? Leave your comments below…
