How well do you communicate in the business arena?

‘Business English’ is often a touchy subject, as everyone feels they can speak, and therefore write, ‘good English’, but they seem to forget that these rules change, depending on current trends and the latest communication platforms. I did some research on the topic and was literally overwhelmed by the amount of information out there - this can prove to be a hindrance as people are feeling quite 'information overloaded' these days, so the chances that they will actually read the information that is out there is rather slim.

Never fear, I've put a few of the most interesting points together for a quick read: Body language is a biggie. It doesn't help to say all the right things if you're not saying them the right way. For more on the topic, I highly recommend The Definitive Book of Body Language by Australian author, Allan Pease. In it, he describes how body language gives away most of the message people people come away with from a conversation – a staggering 93%, in fact. It is therefore useful to have a basic understanding of the effect of body language in interpersonal communications, to accurately assess how the other party is reacting to the message you convey.

There's no doubt that email and instant communications are the way of the future, even for business. With this in mind, remember that there are humans behind the screen names - the basics of conversation are as important as ever. The Wisconsin Business Alumni adds that Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School stated, “In business, communication is everything.” Too true.
