And then there was one... cross off those tasks by following these tips

I've blogged before about my list-making obsession, and the fact that I often end up with so much on my 'to-do' lists that I need to start a whole new list, about these lists.

This can be said to be a symptom of today's information overload, particularly where office workers are concerned. They usually sit in front of a PC all day, bombarded by emails and links to interesting news sites, with the radio playing in the background; people popping in to turn their attention elsewhere, and worries about their private lives. It's a wonder anyone can concentrate and get through their workload with so much distraction - Future Pundit even states that work distractions have the equivalent effect on work efficiency as a 10 point IQ drop. Scary stuff.

Interestingly, I found many sites offering tips on how to focus on one task at a time and minimise distractions at work. Suite101.com estimates that each interruption (answering the phone, sending a follow-up email) costs you 10 minutes. So, six interruptions equals a full hour of your work day - and research has found that the average worker loses over two hours of productivity per day - that's twelve distractions.

Clutter is also listed as a big 'no no', as "the less you have to look at and gaze around at, the more your eyes will turn towards your computer screen. Your office needs to be professional and geared towards work, and shouldn't resemble a second bedroom."

If your office allows you, try wearing ear phones to block out the external distractions or look into sound masking techniques - this can do wonders to increase your focus on the work at hand. Nothing beats the satisfaction of clearing through the clutter and crossing that final task off the list!

Please add your own 'distraction reducing' tips below...
